Meet The Crows Monday

Cornerback Ronald McDonald

Welcome to Meet The Crows Monday – a weekly segment that brings the #CrowNation closer to the team.

It’s time for a special Bank Holiday introduction to another Crow, this time coming in the form of the “Irish Warrior” Ronan McAleenan. The true MVP of the Crows tell us his secrets and how he has become the greatest player to line up in a Crows uniform.

[Editor’s note: guess who’s in charge of these posts?]

Name: Ronan McAleenan

Position: Corner Back

Number: 22

How long have you been playing Flag Football?
I have been playing flag for 3 years now, playing in my second season for The Crows.

How did you come to join the Manchester Crows?
I had just moved to England and wanted to try a different sport after playing association football and distance running for a number of years, so I decided to try American football. I intended to try flag first and move onto kitted and found The Crows online, but I caught the bug for flag and never left.

If you weren’t playing Football, what sport would you be involved in?
I would probably go back to my roots and play association football, road run and fell run again.

What is your favourite pre-game meal?
I don’t tend to eat breakfast most of the time. Game days consist of a meal deal sandwich from somewhere local to the venue and a *insert name of energy drink for potential sponsorships*.

What is your favourite cookie?
I am a huge fan of Hob-Nobs. And if I am feeling extra saucy and payday has happened I will dabble with a chocolate Hob-Nob or a Maryland cookie.

The most underrated Crow is…
I have to say Nige for this one. When he started he had bricks for hands but since then he has developed in leaps and bounds. Racking up defensive stats like a man possessed and adding interceptions to his game, he just gets better every time he plays.

The funniest moment from last season was…
I can’t pinpoint a single moment so I will give it to a series of moments. Namely, [REDACTED]’s commitment to committing egregious personal fouls on both sides of the ball and against every opposition going throughout the season.

Which team(s) do you look forward to playing against?
I love a derby in all sports so has to be the Titans for me. A Manchester derby where the red side (well maroon) outdo the blue side just holds a warm place in my heart.

Which Crow has the worst pre-game routine?
Has to be Rob “Sure, I’ll Turn Up Just Before Kick-off” Connor. I can’t fault him because everyone loves a lie in, especially on a weekend.

I also have to give a shout out to a one off pre-game routine that was witnessed: Phil’s Sunday morning routine in Glasgow at Flagging New Year. I admired his dedication at the utilisation of the full functionality of the shower facilities.

An interesting fact about yourself?

Before becoming a member of The Crow army I was a member of Robert Baratheon’s army, Renly Baratheon’s army and Robb Stark’s army.

My goal for this season is…
Get to the Championship finals. I don’t really have stat goals. I just want to contribute as much as I can to the team and take us as far as we can going forward.

On second thoughts, one pick 6 before Nick would be nice.

Who is your NFL counterpart?

My NFL counterpart has to be Pat “Boomstick” McAfee. One of the more fun NFL players I like to think that my personality and game reflects on his. I always try to have a much fun as possible when playing, I spend a lot of time of the sideline, and I am probably going to be found swimming drunkenly in a canal at some point in my life.
